Fringe Arts, Philadelphia
Fringe Arts, Philadelphia PA
Fringe Arts contracted Keene Consulting to elevate the experience of their patrons by solving an audience flow problem in their lobby, restaurant and restroom spaces. On a two-day site visit we observed first hand how audiences responded to the architecture and customer service offerings of Fringe Arts. We then made recommendations for procedural and architectural changes to improve the audience flow and provide a better patron experience. Working closely with Fringe Arts’ architect, Keene ensured these changes were cost-efficient and beautiful. The results of our work reduced lines and patron confusion. - The Shed, New York
The Shed
In 2013, prior to breaking ground, the architect and leadership team for the Shed asked Joe Melillo of BAM for a recommendation for someone who could review the design and operating paradigm of this new building and offer practical insight into how to make it operate efficiently and effectively. For the next five years, Neil collaborated with architects and artists to design and build the 170,000 square foot performing and visual arts center at Hudson Yards. Responsibilities included: advising how to make the building as cost effective to operate as possible; creating initial institutional financial modeling; developing an initial organizational staffing paradigm; and structuring relationships with multiple trades and establishing negotiating plans for collective bargaining units. - Wilma Theater, Philadelphia
Wilma Theater
After an 18-year hiatus, Neil was invited back to the Wilma by the founding Artistic Director, Blanka Zizka, and the Board of Directors as Interim Managing Director. His brief was to refocus the organization artistically and rebuild the marketing, development, and finance departments in order to support a new artistic initiative and stabilize the company financially. The resulting plan included restructuring much of the staffing, reallocating investment funds and expanding and diversifying the artistic leadership. The new plan launched on February 18, 2020 and is called the Next Chapter. See https://wilmatheater.org/next-chapter/ for more details. - Sydney Opera House
Sydney Opera House
In his first year after moving to Sydney and starting work as Production Manager at the Sydney Theater Company, Neil developed a collaborative relationship with the Sydney Opera House. He regularly advised on new hires and multi-million-dollar maintenance contract tender processes. As the lead operations liaison between the Sydney Theater Company and the Opera House, he worked with senior operations management to revise staffing policies for union technicians in order to better serve the resident companies and reduce labor costs for all. - Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
Kennedy Center
The Kennedy Center saw an opportunity to improve communication and collaboration between its varied departments by making better use of one of its key software tools: ArtsVision. Neil was brought in to work with multiple users to achieve this goal. Working collaboratively with these stakeholders, he established new working groups, created new information forms and laid out workflow systems centered around the ArtsVision platform that would reduce the workload across all users and increase data gathering and flow of information. - NYU Tish School for the Arts
NYU Tish School for the Arts
NYU has one of the premier theater education programs in the country. When the undergraduate program’s staff Production Manager left mid-season in 2017, the administration brought Neil in as the Interim to bring fresh eyes to the program’s operations. Over the next semester, while running day to day operations, Neil redesigned the season budgeting and budget tracking systems; restructured departmental reporting and created new job descriptions for all staff positions. - The Crossing, Philadelphia

The Perelman Center, New York
The Perelman Center
The Perelman Center is designed to be one of the most versatile performing arts buildings in the world. By combining and separating spaces, it can be configured in more than 20 different theatrical formats, many of which can operate simultaneously due to its acoustical separation capabilities. When a new leadership team took the reins in 2019, Neil was asked to provide peer review of the physical plant and operating assumptions. The challenge was to find operating and design efficiencies without compromising versatility. Over time, this role expanded to include creation of institutional and project budget templates; collaboration with the artistic team on season planning; development of labor and staffing models and negotiations of labor contracts and agreements. -
Dallas Theater Center
Dallas Theater Center, Dallas TX
In the Spring of 2021, Keene Consulting began a pay equity project with the Tony-award winning Dallas Theater Center (DTC). During the course of the six month project, the team developed a new organizational chart and created a census database, then analyzed them on factors including racial identity, gender identity, department, tenure, and market comparisons. We then made recommendations for salary adjustments to correct found inequities. The project was completed and implemented on the projected timeline, and Keene was subsequently retained to continue to manage the census to ensure continued pay equity. Keene Consulting is now working with DTC to develop a master plan for the renovation and expansion of their original home: The Kalita Humphreys Theater. -
ZACH Theatre, Austin
ZACH Theater, Austin TX
Based on the success of our work with Dallas Theater Center, ZACH Theatre in nearby in Austin, TX reached out to Keene for a similar pay equity study. To lay the groundwork for this project, Keene first updated ZACH's organizational staffing chart and created a custom census database. We then studied factors including racial identity, gender identity, department and individual responsibilities, tenure, and market comparisons to look for inequities. We then layered in the volatile cost of living index in Austin to our analysis. We are now in the process of socializing our findings with the full ZACH staff and rolling out compensation adjustments that will correct for cost of living issues and previously unintended inequities.- Epstein Family Amphitheater at UC San Diego

Part-way through the project, UCSD engaged Keene to program and produce the opening week for the venue.- Powerhouse Arts, Brooklyn

Powerhouse Arts was founded to create a robust platform for art production and employment in the arts. It supports fabrication, production and education in wood, metal, ceramic, textile, and printing.
